Stated and unstated highlights from President Trump’s solemn address to the nation.
I don’t remember saying the coronavirus would soon be down to two cases or maybe one in the United States. That’s just natural optimism based on my having already marshalled “the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people.” I’m leading the “most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history.”
You know how tough I am about defending our homeland. “At the very start of the outbreak, we instituted sweeping travel restrictions on China and put in place the first federally mandated quarantine in over fifty years.” And because of my “early intense action, we have seen dramatically fewer cases of the virus in the United States than are now present in Europe.” These same Europeans, who neglect to pay their share of NATO and allow their continent to be overrun by aliens, “failed to take the same precautions and restrict travel from China and other hotspots.”
Therefore, “I have decided to take several strong… actions to protect the health… of all Americans. To keep new cases from entering our shores, we will be suspending all travel from Europe to the United States for the next thirty days.” This restriction will not apply to the United Kingdom. The rates of infection and mortality are a little higher there than here but they are our historical brothers. Over in Asia, another troubled continent, we’re keeping an eye on the Chinese and South Koreans, “and as their situation improves we will reevaluate the restrictions and warnings that are currently in place.”
I’m also “cutting massive amounts of red tape to make antiviral therapies available in record time… (And) testing and testing capabilities are expanding rapidly day by day. We are moving very quickly.” My politically motivated critics don’t want to admit that. They should acknowledge that for “the vast majority of Americans the risk is very, very low.” If you’re not really old, I think you’ve got it made.
Don’t worry if you get the virus and have to stay home from work. “I will soon take unprecedented emergency action to provide financial relief.” Thanks to the economic policies I’ve “put into place the last three years, we have the greatest economy anywhere in the world by far.” We’re rich and ready because I cut funding to some of Obama’s disease security programs. I also slashed about eighty percent of the budget for The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some say those moves look dumb now. Others say they looked dumb even then. Let them talk. We all know who’s got the greatest brain in the world.
